The Complete Retinol Guide for Women Over 50

If there's one ingredient that dermatologists universally recommend for mature skin, it's retinol. But I'll be honest – my first experience with it was a disaster. Red, flaky, irritated skin that looked WORSE than before.

Here's what I wish someone had told me from the start.

What Is Retinol?

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A that:

  • Speeds up cell turnover
  • Boosts collagen production
  • Fades dark spots
  • Smooths fine lines and wrinkles

How to Start (Without the Burn)

The Sandwich Method

Apply moisturizer, then retinol, then another layer of moisturizer. This buffers the retinol and reduces irritation.

Start Slow

  • Week 1-2: Once per week
  • Week 3-4: Twice per week
  • Month 2+: Every other night
  • Month 3+: Nightly (if tolerated)

Choose the Right Strength

Start with 0.25% or 0.5%. You can always work up to stronger formulas.

When to Apply

Always at night! Retinol makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight. And speaking of which – you MUST wear SPF during the day when using retinol.
